A tanker reported being hit by several projectiles 51 nautical miles off Qatar's northern coast. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said casualties were reported and authorities were investigating.
UKMTO said the incident took place on October 7, about 94 kilometers off Qatar. The agency did not identify the vessel or specify the number of casualties or the origin of the projectiles.
The report came from the tanker itself. The Hindu said the incident occurred about 500 kilometers from the Strait of Hormuz. UKMTO said authorities were investigating but did not identify the vessel's flag.
Ships in the Gulf and vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz have faced repeated attacks since the West Asia war began in late February, The Hindu reported. The strait remains a key route for oil and gas shipments. The newspaper said Iran has blockaded it and fired on vessels it accuses of unauthorized crossings. The United States has set up a counter-blockade of Iranian ports.
Diplomatic efforts to end the conflict have been deadlocked for months, The Hindu said. Before the war, around one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the strait.
