Telangana ministers to discuss farmer relief as rainfall deficit persists

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has called a meeting of ministers for October 12 to review the rainfall shortfall, the effects of El Niño and support for farmers. The state government says rainfall was 17% below normal.
The meeting is expected to assess conditions in areas that received insufficient rain and identify urgent steps for agriculture. Irrigation, drinking water supplies and rising electricity demand are also on the agenda.
The government says drought-like conditions have affected nearly 235 administrative blocks, known as mandals. The state legislature has already urged the central government to declare the affected areas drought-hit and provide financial assistance. Telangana has also sought a special package of 200 billion rupees.
Ministers may review a drought-mitigation plan prepared by a cabinet subcommittee. They are also expected to consider proposals from political parties, farmers’ organisations and experts. The state cabinet had previously held an extensive discussion on the rainfall deficit.
