Three-division boxing champion Wilfredo Gomez dies at 69

Puerto Rican boxer Wilfredo Gomez, who won world titles in three weight divisions, has died aged 69. The Ring and news agency EFE reported his death on October 11. The original report did not specify a cause of death.

Known as 'Bazooka', Gomez died a few weeks before his 70th birthday, which would have fallen on October 29. His professional career ended in 1989.

He fought 48 professional bouts, recording 44 victories, including 42 knockouts, three losses and one draw. His championships included World Boxing Council titles at super bantamweight and featherweight and a World Boxing Association belt at super featherweight.

His record featured 17 successful defences of the super bantamweight title, each ending in a knockout victory. EFE highlighted that achievement in its report of his death.

In 1974, Gomez became the first Puerto Rican to win an amateur world boxing championship. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1995.
