Tretyakov Gallery opens exhibition of Ivan Lubennikov's paintings

The Tretyakov Gallery has opened Russian Artist Ivan Lubennikov at its building on Kadashevskaya Embankment, marking the artist's 75th birth anniversary.

The exhibition centres on paintings from his mature period, from the late 1990s until his death in 2021. Lubennikov worked in both easel painting and monumental art.

His monumental projects included the design of the Trekhgornaya Manufaktura cultural centre and Zvenigorod railway station, an exhibition commemorating Soviet prisoners at Auschwitz, Moscow's Taganka Theatre and the Mayakovsky Museum.

In the 2000s he worked on Moscow's Mayakovskaya, Sretensky Bulvar and Slavyansky Bulvar metro stations. He also created the Kurochka Ryaba stained-glass work for Madeleine station in Paris.

Female figures, landscapes and folk subjects feature prominently in his paintings. His widow, Natalia Glebova, told RIA Novosti that he drew inspiration from everyday things and turned to Russian legends and fairy tales in some works.

Lubennikov's work has been exhibited in Russia, France, the Netherlands, the United States, Italy and Turkey. His works are held in museum and private collections.

The exhibition on Kadashevskaya Embankment runs until March 14.
