Trump jokes about renaming an ocean after himself

Donald Trump floated renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean at a rally in Tennessee. He jokingly suggested Trump Ocean or Ocean of the Americas as possible names.

The US president said that, after a gulf and a lake, the country needed an ocean and a major river with a new name. The rally took place in Clarksville on October 10, The Washington Post reported.

Trump ruled out changing the names of the Hudson and Mississippi rivers. He referred to explorer Henry Hudson when discussing the former and cited his election results when expressing affection for Mississippi.

In January 2025, Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be called the Gulf of America in US usage. In August, he also renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America.

He had already floated changing an ocean's name in August. His rally remarks returned to that idea, but there was no announcement that he had signed an order to implement it.
