Udmurtia court sets combined 24-year term after conviction for woman’s killing

A court in Russia’s Udmurtia convicted a 54-year-old man of killing a woman in connection with rape. It imposed 12 years for the crime and a combined term of 24 years taking earlier sentences into account, the regional courts’ press service said.

According to the court press service, the crime occurred on June 8, 2006, on the route from Kamskoye to Kambarka. The man, then 34, raped a 26-year-old woman in woodland and strangled her to conceal the crime. Her body was found on June 22.

The defendant was already serving sentences for intentionally causing grievous bodily harm and sexual offences. He admitted the new charge and assisted the investigation, the press service said.

The final sentence provides for a special-regime penal colony and two years of restrictions on freedom. Time already served under earlier judgments was credited toward the prison term.
