Zelenskyy offers elections after 60 days of complete ceasefire

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would organise elections if Russia agreed to a complete 60-day ceasefire, responding to Donald Trump's call for a new Ukrainian president.

The Ukrainian leader set out the proposal on ABC's This Week on October 11. He asked Trump to urge Vladimir Putin to provide two months without hostilities so that Ukraine could arrange voting.

Zelenskyy said Ukrainians should decide who leads their country. His response followed Trump's criticism a day earlier of Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries.

Trump's comments came after the United States temporarily lifted sanctions on Russian fuel. The sanctions had been intended to restrict revenue available to Moscow for its war in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also disputed attempts to blame Ukraine for rising fuel prices, pointing instead to the war in the Middle East. Earlier on Sunday, he said Ukraine was ready to stop attacking Russian refineries if Moscow halted strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
