Magnitude 6.2 earthquake recorded near Papua New Guinea

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake was recorded near Papua New Guinea on October 11. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre put its depth at 53 kilometres.

The earthquake occurred at 14:07 UTC, or 17:07 Moscow time. EMSC located the epicentre 88 kilometres southeast of Arawa, a town with a population of about 40,200.

The US Geological Survey also measured the magnitude at 6.2. Its catalogue placed the event 79 kilometres south-southeast of Panguna, with a depth of approximately 53.5 kilometres.

RIA Novosti said no reports of injuries or damage had been received when its report was published. That described the information available at the time, rather than a confirmed assessment of every community near the earthquake.
