Veterinarian advises keeping tick protection during warm autumn weather

It is too early to stop pets’ tick protection while autumn weather remains warm, veterinarian Vera Zemskaya said. She advised dog owners to consider where their animals walk and follow the product instructions.
In an October 9 interview with RIA Novosti, the head of the Krasnogvardeyskaya veterinary clinic explained that ticks remain active during warm autumn periods. Dogs walking in parks, woodland, country gardens or tall grass generally need protection until sustained colder weather.
Fleas can maintain their life cycle in heated indoor spaces through winter. Zemskaya said protection may therefore be needed beyond the warm season where infestation is a risk. Indoor cats face less exposure to ticks, but fleas can be brought home by people, dogs or objects.
The veterinarian warned against extra treatments beyond the instructions and using dog products on cats without checking their intended use. A prevention plan should reflect the animal’s species and veterinary advice.
Pets should be checked after walks. Prevention reduces risk but does not make tick attachment impossible. Biologist Evgenia Kalinina previously linked this autumn’s extended tick activity to unusually warm weather.
