Zakharova explains Russian diplomatic note over Navai detention
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described a diplomatic note to Kazakhstan over rapper Navai’s detention as a standard consular protection procedure.
She said Russian diplomats must protect citizens abroad regardless of the circumstances. Their role does not include investigating events or judging citizens’ actions. Sending a note is a routine way to communicate with the host country’s authorities.
Navai Bakirov, who performs as Navai, was detained at the Korday border crossing on suspicion of attempted drug smuggling. Tengri Life reported that a narcotic substance was found during a vehicle search. His Astana concert, scheduled for October 14, was cancelled.
Tengrinews reported that a court ordered Bakirov held in custody for two months on October 15.
