Zaporizhzhya plant official reports risks to diesel fuel deliveries

Evgenia Yashina, communications director for the Russian administration of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear plant, said deliveries remained extremely difficult. She said attacks on access roads threatened people and vehicles.

Yashina described shelling and drone attacks on roads leading to the plant. She said the threat affected freight vehicles and the people delivering supplies, including fuel for backup power.

The Russian administration's representative blamed Ukraine's armed forces for the attacks. TASS carried her assessment, which Lenta.ru summarised on October 10.

Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev had also described an escalation around the plant. He urged the International Atomic Energy Agency to identify those responsible for strikes as well as recording them.

The original report described the agency's position in terms of preserving impartiality. Yashina's attribution of responsibility remains a statement by the Russian side rather than an agency finding.

Diesel generators provide backup power when the plant loses external electricity supplies. Safe fuel delivery is therefore connected to maintaining that reserve.
