Zlatoust patient discharged after two operations on her 100th birthday

A patient at Zlatoust's city hospital was discharged on her 100th birthday after two operations for acute bowel obstruction, the Chelyabinsk regional health ministry reported on October 12.

The woman was 99 when she was admitted to the surgical ward. During emergency surgery, doctors discovered a tumour in the caecum and created a bypass connection between sections of the intestine.

A complication developed after the first operation, requiring another procedure. Deputy chief physician for surgery Ilnur Galiullin said surgeons, anaesthetists and intensive care specialists worked together on her treatment.

According to Galiullin, she came through both operations and is recovering in stable condition. The regional ministry said her discharge coincided with her 100th birthday.

She still faces a planned stage of treatment for the cancer. Her discharge following treatment of the acute condition does not mean that the cancer treatment is complete. The ministry did not disclose her name or the precise dates of the operations.
