The Social Reckoning opens with an estimated $5.5 million
Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning earned about $5.5 million in its opening weekend at the North American box office, according to preliminary estimates released on Sunday, October 11.
The film follows The Social Network but shifts its focus from Facebook’s early years to whistleblower Frances Haugen. The former employee disclosed documents that became known as the Facebook Files.
The Social Network opened with $22 million in 2010 and ultimately grossed $97 million domestically. Those figures are not adjusted for changes in ticket prices over sixteen years.
The new film entered wide release on October 9. Box Office Mojo, The Numbers and AP’s Sunday box office report corroborate the opening estimate.
Alex Gibney’s documentary Musk earned about $69,000 in four theatres over the same weekend. Its limited release means that figure cannot be compared directly with the wide release of Sorkin’s film.
