Gold Coast confirms trade for Hawthorn forwards Schubert and Butler
Gold Coast confirmed on October 12 that Aidan Schubert and Sam Butler will join its AFL squad in a completed trade with Hawthorn.
The Suns receive both forwards, Hawthorn’s first-round selection in 2028 and their own third-round selection in 2027, which had previously been traded away.
Hawthorn receives Gold Coast’s second-round selection in 2027 and its first- and second-round selections in 2028. The confirmed terms replace earlier expectations that the Hawks would receive second-round picks for the pair.
The additions follow Ben King’s move from Gold Coast to Hawthorn. Schubert agreed to a five-year deal last week, according to the earlier report.
Butler sought greater playing opportunities after struggling to establish himself in Hawthorn’s lineup. A broken leg in 2024 had disrupted his progress. His brother Dan was part of Richmond’s 2017 premiership team under Damien Hardwick, now Gold Coast’s coach.
