Altai, North Ossetia and Sakhalin lead ASI measure of urban green land

Almost 67% of urban land in the three leading Russian regions is allocated to parks and green zones on average, compared with a national average of 24%, the Agency for Strategic Initiatives told RIA Novosti on October 12.

The Republic of Altai, North Ossetia and Sakhalin Region topped that measure in an analytical report based on ASI’s national quality-of-life ranking. The figures concern land within urban boundaries, rather than the entire territory of each region.

The agency also estimates that about 69% of people in Russia live within a 15-minute walk of a park, square or forest. Walking access and the share of land allocated to green spaces are separate indicators used to assess urban greenery.

ASI combines Rosstat statistics with geospatial analysis for these measures. Its wider quality-of-life ranking, compiled since 2021, also draws on surveys and covers healthcare, education, infrastructure and the urban environment.
