América-MG relegated to Brazil’s third division after loss to Fortaleza

América-MG lost 1-0 to Fortaleza and was mathematically relegated from Brazil’s Série B with six rounds left in the season.

The match was played on Oct. 7 at Independência Stadium in Belo Horizonte. The defeat confirmed América’s drop to Série C. The club is 19th with 17 points from 32 matches, 21 points behind Botafogo-SP, the first team outside the relegation places, with only 18 points still available.

Fans protested during and after the game, chanting for the team and its leadership to be dismissed. Some played a funeral march as an ironic symbol of the club’s relegation. CNN Brasil reported that Paraguay-born player Segovinha was also targeted by supporters.

América has six fixtures left, against Criciúma, Operário-PR, Cuiabá, Londrina-PR, Ceará and Avaí. Their results will not change the club’s relegation. UOL and Flashscore also reported the 1-0 result and the team’s mathematical elimination.
