Queensland Reds back Treyvon Pritchard is recovering from an ankle fracture and ligament injury sustained at the under-20 world championship in July. World Rugby will ban the dangerous tackle that caused the injury from November 1.
Pritchard was injured in Australia’s under-20 match against Wales. A tackle by Wales scrum-half Sion Davies ended the Australian’s tournament, but the referee did not penalize Davies for the incident.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Reds general manager Sam Cordingley expects Pritchard to be fit for the start of next Super Rugby season. The club hopes to take him on its November tour of Japan and Italy, although his participation in matches has not been confirmed.
World Rugby announced on October 7 that from November 1 a hip-drop tackle will be explicitly classified as dangerous play. The minimum sanction will be a penalty kick. The governing body said the change is intended to reduce the risk of serious injuries.
