Three-year-old filly Satono Glow is set to run in Saturday’s Roman Consul Stakes after winning three of her four starts. Trainer Tom Charlton sees the race as preparation for a possible tilt at the Coolmore Stud Stakes.
The 1,200-metre Group 2 race will be held at Sydney’s Rosehill track on October 10. Zac Lloyd will ride Satono Glow from barrier nine after two horses were scratched. TAB listed her at $2.90, just behind favourite Paradoxium at $2.60.
Satono Glow’s latest win came in the Group 3 Cap D’Antibes Stakes over 1,100 metres at Flemington on September 12. Earlier she won on debut at Warwick Farm and took the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes at Flemington by three lengths. She finished fourth in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick in April after being held behind a group of runners for much of the home straight.
Charlton said the stable chose to continue her preparation in Sydney rather than keep her in Melbourne after the September win. The longer-term target is the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes over 1,200 metres at Flemington on October 31. He described her last victory as impressive and encouraging.
Charlton and co-trainer John O’Shea will also field Peyton in the Roman Consul, with Kerrin McEvoy riding from barrier seven. Charlton said the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes at Flemington on October 24 could be a next target. Peyton missed a recent run after becoming unsettled at the barriers, leaving him short of an ideal preparation.
King Pedro is also set to run in Saturday’s 1,900-metre Hill Stakes at Rosehill. The five-year-old import won the Stayers and Grafton Cup during winter, but illness delayed his return. Charlton said the Sydney Cup in autumn may now be a more realistic target than the Melbourne races initially planned.
