Construction begins on medical device centre in Nizhny Novgorod

Construction has begun in Nizhny Novgorod on the Territory of Health centre for developing, manufacturing and clinically testing Russian medical devices. Investment is estimated at more than 2.5 billion roubles, the regional government said.

A time capsule was laid at the site on 20 October. Silneks, a resident of the Quantum Valley innovation centre, will build the complex, which will cover more than 20 thousand square metres. The project comprises three phases.

The first research and production module is scheduled for completion in 2028. Planned products include breast, testicular and buttock implants, hyaluronic acid and biodegradable fillers. The stated annual capacity is up to 45 thousand silicone implants and up to 500 thousand injectable hyaluronic acid products.

The second module will focus on additive manufacturing and 3D printing. It will be used to develop implant designs, new materials and medical products.

The third phase includes a multidisciplinary clinic cluster covering more than 14 thousand square metres. It will support clinical trials, medical development and specialist training.

Natalya Manturova, the Russian Health Ministry's chief external specialist in plastic surgery, said the Institute of Plastic Surgery and Cosmetology was a project partner. It will participate in development, manufacturing, clinical testing and training.

Governor Gleb Nikitin said a separate City of Health complex, including an oncology centre and a nuclear medicine centre, was also planned nearby. The regional industry ministry will support implementation of the medical device centre project.
