Russia’s Investigative Committee said on Oct. 8 that a court had ordered a children’s camp worker in Syzran held in pretrial detention for two months. He is charged with torturing children and failing to fulfill child-rearing duties.
Investigators opened a criminal case after a recording from the Druzhnyye Rebyata camp circulated on social media. The post’s caption identified the children as two brothers with autism spectrum disorder. Reports accompanying the recording said a counselor struck both children in turn, first with a slipper and then with a hand.
Local authorities said the incident took place at a camp in Syzran, in Russia’s Samara region. The court ordered the accused held for two months. The Investigative Committee said he was charged with torture and failure to fulfill duties in raising minors.
