Danu Robotics raises $5 million to expand recycling robot business

Edinburgh-based Danu Robotics has raised $5 million in late-seed funding, TechCrunch reports. The money will support commercial delivery of H.E.R.O., its robot for sorting recyclable materials.

Founder Amy Ma worked on the system for six years. The robot grips objects with a mechanical pincer rather than the suction approach used by some competitors. Danu also uses artificial intelligence to keep improving its software.

TechCrunch reports $500,000 in signed contracts and letters of interest from two large customers. More than 200 potential customers are in the sales pipeline. That figure describes prospective deals rather than completed contracts.

Ma estimates that a sorting facility could gain $485,000 in additional revenue from the robot. Her calculation includes a $160,000 initial investment and $24,000 in annual maintenance. These are the founder's estimates rather than verified results for every facility.

Glacier and RecycleEye already offer competing systems with suction-based arms. Ma hopes to compete on cost and the efficiency of recovering materials that recycling facilities sell.

Danu's next goal is to make its shipping system sturdier, smaller and more versatile. Ma wants a compact version that can sort waste at events, shopping centers, hospitals and airports. Those uses remain a direction for further development.
