Dmitriev links EU winter gas risk to its own decisions

Kirill Dmitriev described the risk of a European Union winter gas shortfall as a consequence of the bloc's own actions. The Russian presidential envoy posted the assessment on X on 9 October.
Dmitriev was commenting on a Politico report about possible winter gas shortages. The article drew on analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, IEEFA. His explanation of the causes is a political assessment.
IEEFA says low stocks and the end of Russian LNG imports from January 2027 could require winter demand to fall by about 7% from the previous season, equivalent to roughly 14 billion cubic metres.
The institute stresses that this does not mean storage will run empty. Gas can be withdrawn less quickly as inventories fall, increasing vulnerability during late-winter cold spells. The analysis therefore describes conditional risks, rather than an already established shortage over the entire future season.
