Driver and car owner contact police after Leipzig airport fence breach

The driver of a car that broke through the fence at Leipzig/Halle Airport said through a lawyer that he had lost control. Police said he and the vehicle’s owner had voluntarily contacted the authorities.

The 20-year-old driver said he left the accident scene and the car was subsequently towed to private premises. Police said he did not have a driving licence.

Leipzig prosecutors are investigating suspected failure to stop after an accident and driving without a licence. The car’s 32-year-old owner is suspected of allowing an unlicensed person to use it. Police identified both men as Syrian citizens.

The damaged fence was discovered over the weekend. A runway was temporarily closed while the airport grounds were checked. The car has been seized and the investigation is continuing, police said.
