An unnamed European diplomat told Izvestia that Germany supports reducing visa issuance to Russian citizens and is urging other EU countries to take similar steps, Lenta.ru reported.
According to the report, a German Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Berlin wants to prevent people who could pose a potential threat from entering the country.
Germany publicly urged EU countries in September to issue fewer tourist visas to Russian citizens. The German government has also cited security concerns in explaining its stricter visa rules. Under the general rule, Russian citizens applying in Russia can receive only short-validity, single-entry Schengen visas.
The German government has previously cited possible security risks when explaining stricter scrutiny of Russian visa applications. The report does not specify what further measures Berlin is now seeking.
