Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergei Nechayev said Europeans are increasingly skeptical of claims that Russia poses a threat and do not want to prepare for a possible conflict with Moscow. RIA Novosti reported his remarks.
Nechayev said people in European countries do not want to see their economies, industries and social systems destroyed. In his view, they express that position both at street demonstrations and in elections.
The diplomat also described the European position as contradictory. He said governments believe Moscow intends to attack NATO while also portraying Russia as weakened and closer to a “strategic defeat.” The remarks are Nechayev’s assessment, as reported by RIA Novosti. The report did not cite polling or other evidence to support his generalization about European public opinion.
