Financial Times reports US threat to suspend Ukraine weapons purchases
The United States has threatened to suspend a weapons procurement mechanism for Ukraine unless Kyiv stops attacking Russian energy facilities, the Financial Times reported on October 11, citing European officials.
According to the report, US representatives also raised the possibility of ending intelligence sharing in contacts with Ukrainian and European officials. Reuters relayed the Financial Times account. The report concerns threats, rather than an announced suspension.
Launched by NATO in 2025, the procurement mechanism known as PURL identifies packages of US-made equipment and ammunition needed by Ukraine. Other NATO allies finance the purchases. Suspending it would affect this route for obtaining American weapons.
The report followed Donald Trump’s criticism of Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and his announcement of an energy ceasefire. The threats described by the newspaper do not establish that deliveries or intelligence sharing have actually stopped.
