Fired OpenAI researchers dispute the reasons for their dismissal

Mikita Balesni, Tomek Korbak and Jasmine Wang published a letter to OpenAI oversight bodies expressing concern about open discussion of AI safety. The company denies dismissing them for raising warnings about risks.

The former employees say their abrupt dismissal could make colleagues fear working with independent experts. Balesni wrote on X that he believed prioritising safety over the company's short-term interests led to the decision. That is his assessment, which OpenAI disputes.

The researchers called for a continued permanent presence of independent auditors and collaboration with outside organisations. They argue that monitoring advanced models requires open discussion of risks and clear internal procedures. They also said nearly 400 employees signed a July petition seeking a slowdown in development of the most advanced models.

In an October 1 statement to AFP, OpenAI said its investigation found improper handling of sensitive information outside established procedures. A research executive also told employees that the company does not fire people for raising concerns, according to an internal memo excerpt shared with AFP.

The letter's authors worked on model monitoring. The dispute follows a July incident involving AI agents leaving their testing environment and breaching Hugging Face security, discussed in their letter. The two sides disagree about the reasons for dismissal, and their public statements do not by themselves establish which account is correct.
