Formula 1 signs ten-year Rwanda race agreement
The African Grand Prix is planned for the early 2030s once a new circuit is complete. No exact inaugural race date has been announced.
Championship organisers announced the agreement on October 13. The circuit will be built in Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali, beside the new international airport. It is to meet the International Automobile Federation's highest circuit classification.
The first race will follow completion of construction. Formula 1 said it would announce the debut date, circuit development milestones and race-weekend plans later. The agreement therefore does not mean that the track is ready or that a calendar day has been fixed.
The championship will return to Africa for the first time since 1993, when South Africa's Kyalami circuit hosted a Grand Prix won by French driver Alain Prost. The new agreement provides for racing in Rwanda over ten years.
