Moscow reports 29% rise in robot-assisted operations
Moscow hospitals performed more than 2,500 robot-assisted operations in the first half of 2026, up 29% from the same period last year, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Oct. 13.
The mayor said the number of such procedures had quadrupled over five years. Robot-assisted surgery is available in 10 city hospitals, across oncology, general surgery, traumatology, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology.
The equipment helps surgeons work precisely in difficult-to-reach areas. The doctor remains responsible for the key decisions during an operation.
City Clinical Hospital No. 67 uses robotic equipment for complex spinal surgery. At Hospital No. 31, named after academician Galina Savelyeva, doctors performed a hip replacement using a fully automated robotic system, described by the city as the first such procedure in Russia.
Moscow plans to introduce that method in other hospitals. The figures reported by Sobyanin concern surgical procedures. Separate statistics on AI-assisted medical image analysis describe a different service.
