Storms kill at least five people on Mexico’s Pacific coast
At least five people died after Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel brought flooding to Mexico’s Pacific coast, according to reports published on Oct. 13.
Four members of a family, including children, died in Ensenada, Baja California, after floodwater inundated their home, Kommersant reported. A man died beneath a collapsed wall in Chilpancingo. AP independently reported five deaths linked to the tropical weather systems.
Searches for missing residents continued in Ensenada. Kommersant reported up to 10 people missing and about 14,000 emergency workers, military personnel and rescuers deployed in Baja California.
Simon weakened to Category 2 after reaching Category 4. Its centre remained offshore, but wind and rain continued affecting coastal communities. The lower classification did not mean the flooding risk had ended.
