Delhi police register four cases over alleged protest misinformation
Delhi police registered four cases against social media accounts accused of spreading false claims about protests in the capital, officials said on Oct. 13. Accounts allegedly based in Pakistan are under scrutiny.
The Hindu reported the cases, and The Times of India separately carried the police account through PTI. Officials said posts circulated on Oct. 10 claimed that several people had died during the demonstrations.
Police described those claims as false and alleged that some posts sought to disturb public order. The reported location of the accounts and the allegation of an organised hostile narrative remain police claims.
Officials also said several Pakistan-based accounts had been deactivated as part of the response. The reports did not name the account operators or identify a court ruling establishing their responsibility.
The registration of cases is a new investigative step concerning online posts. It is separate from the detentions of protest leaders and court proceedings about restrictions on demonstrations.
