GlobalConnect prepares new fiber link connecting Sweden, Estonia and Finland
GlobalConnect AB is preparing a new fiber-optic link between Sweden, Estonia and Finland, with service expected to begin in 2027, ERR reported.
The route will run from Sweden’s Gotland to Estonia’s Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands, across mainland Estonia and along the seabed to Helsinki. Estonia’s overland section will cover about 250 kilometres, with subsea sections adding another 300 kilometres.
Sweden-registered GlobalConnect AB will develop and own the infrastructure and arrange the surveys required for its design. The project combines submarine and terrestrial cables, Tõnu Nirk, head of communications markets at Estonia’s Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs, told ERR.
Construction is expected to cost approximately €40 million, including €15.7 million from the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility.
Nirk said the additional route is needed following damage to underwater infrastructure and as demand for data transmission grows. Estonia currently has two communications links with Sweden and six with Finland.
Preparations began in 2025. Cable installation is scheduled for this year and next.
