Gynecologist says abstinence alone is not a health risk

Gynecologist Dmitry Lubnin says people who are comfortable without sex need not worry about abstinence, while distress over its absence may affect wellbeing.

Answering questions from subscribers to his Telegram channel, the doctor said physiological stimulation of the vagina during intercourse is not a requirement for maintaining health. People who are content without sex and do not feel frustrated about it need not worry about abstinence, he said.

If a lack of sex causes severe distress, health problems may develop over time, Lubnin said. He did not specify which conditions he had in mind.

Changes in neurotransmitters and other substances during sex, according to the gynecologist, matter primarily for forming a relationship with a partner, rather than for maintaining physical health.

Sexologist Angelina Prytkova previously said that infrequent sex does not necessarily mean a couple will break up. In her view, the quality of intimacy matters more to a relationship than its frequency.
