Indian actor Nana Patekar dies at 75

Indian actor Nana Patekar has died at his home in Goa at the age of 75. Indian outlets and news agencies reported his death on Oct. 8, and The Associated Press also confirmed it that day.

Indian media reported that Patekar was found unconscious at his home in Dona Paula and taken to Manipal Hospital. Dr. Shekhar Salkar told ANI that medical staff tried to revive him for about 45 minutes, but he did not respond. The Associated Press, citing Press Trust of India and a hospital doctor, also reported his death.

Patekar was declared dead at about 5:20 a.m. local time. Indian reports said a medico-legal case had been registered and an autopsy was planned to establish the cause of death. They described a suspected cardiac arrest as the likely cause.

Patekar, whose birth name was Vishwanath Patekar, was born in Maharashtra on Jan. 1, 1951. He worked for decades in Hindi- and Marathi-language films. His best-known credits include “Parinda,” “Krantiveer,” “Agnisakshi,” “Ab Tak Chhappan” and “Welcome.”

He won India’s National Film Award three times. In 2013, he received the Padma Shri, one of the country’s highest civilian honors.
