L'Equipe reports Monaco needs major player sales to balance budget

Monaco needs to sell more than €100 million worth of players each summer and reduce its wage bill to cover a budget shortfall, L'Equipe reported. RIA Novosti carried the French outlet's account on October 9.
According to L'Equipe, club owner Dmitry Rybolovlev began looking for potential buyers in 2024. About 20 investors expressed interest, but he rejected several offers valuing the club above €300 million. The sale process has been frozen since early 2025, the outlet said.
L'Equipe also reported that Rybolovlev had not contributed personal funds to the club budget for three years. It said he received financial updates every two weeks. Those details are the outlet's reporting rather than terms publicly confirmed by the owner.
French media had previously reported Monaco talks with Spartak and Zenit over a possible transfer of Aleksandr Golovin. The Russian midfielder has played for the club since 2018. Reports of talks do not establish that a transfer took place.
Rybolovlev's company acquired a controlling stake in Monaco in 2011. The club won the French championship in the 2016/17 season, its first title in 17 years.
