Late Romero goal gives Atlético victory at Alavés

Cristian Romero scored in the 87th minute as Atlético Madrid beat Alavés 2-1 in Vitoria in the eighth round of Spain's league championship.

Alejandro Grimaldo put the visitors ahead in the 33rd minute. Lucas Boyé equalised from the penalty spot six minutes into first-half stoppage time, leaving the teams level at the break.

Alavés then had to play with ten men after defender Ángel Pérez received a red card in the 61st minute. Atlético eventually secured the winning goal shortly before the end of normal time.

The victory took Atlético to 19 points and second place in the standings. Alavés were sixth with 11 points following the defeat.

Atlético's next league fixture is away to Espanyol on October 17. Alavés travel to Celta the following day, October 18.
