Panyaza Lesufi pledges clearer messaging on asylum directive

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said on October 9 that authorities needed to explain the withdrawal of a directive on accepting asylum applications more effectively to the public.

Speaking to SABC News, Lesufi acknowledged that communication might have been inadequate. He warned against creating an impression that the state responds to problems only after protests and unlawful conduct. He said that approach would send the wrong message to the public.

South Africa's Home Affairs Department withdrew a directive issued on September 28 following a Constitutional Court judgment. SABC reported unrest in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape in which 24 vehicles were torched nationwide and property was damaged.

Foreign nationals gathered at the department's Marabastad office in Pretoria told SABC they were disappointed. They had hoped the directive would help them obtain documents and regularise their stay in South Africa.

Soweto ward councillor Lefa Molise said clashes between residents and foreign nationals could have been prevented. He said Friday morning was calm following Thursday's unrest, during which at least 10 vehicles were torched. He also credited the police presence with helping the situation.
