Macron says he will keep pressing US to drop Russian diesel deal

Emmanuel Macron intends to keep urging the United States to abandon its diesel supply agreement with Russia, the French president said after the EU summit in Brussels, RBC reported, citing Le Monde.

Macron described the decision as inappropriate and ineffective. He said the arrangement sent a negative signal and deepened divisions between Western countries.

Donald Trump announced the agreement with Vladimir Putin on October 9. The US Treasury subsequently granted a temporary sanctions exemption for the supplies.

Volodymyr Zelensky and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas had also criticised the deal. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent rejected European criticism, pointing to continued European purchases of Russian energy.

RBC reported that US lawmakers prepared legislation on October 16 aimed at blocking the agreement.
