Manipur Naga council gives authorities 48 hours to recover victim’s missing remains

The Joint Tribes Council Manipur has given India’s central government and the state authorities 48 hours to recover the missing remains of Ajinbou R., a 52-year-old man killed in the latest violence.

In a statement issued on October 11, 2026, the council said his head had not been returned to his family. It said it would not permit a post-mortem examination until the remains could be reunited for a dignified burial, and warned of further action if its demand was not met.

The Hindu reported that Ajinbou was allegedly killed during an attack on Makui Ashang village in Kangpokpi district on October 10. His body was taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal on the night of October 11.

The demand follows attacks and shootings in Kangpokpi, Kamjong and Ukhrul districts on October 9 and 10 that left at least nine people dead, according to The Hindu. Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh condemned the killings and instructed officials to restore order and protect residents.

The council blamed the state and central governments for the renewed violence. Its allegations about those responsible for the attacks have not been independently verified.
