CBS News tracks at least 30 immigration-agent shootings during Trump’s second term

Federal immigration agents have been involved in at least 30 shootings during Donald Trump’s second term, according to a CBS News review published on October 9. Nine people were killed and 13 others injured.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has attributed many incidents to drivers using vehicles as weapons against officers. CBS reported that witnesses or defendants dispute that account in some cases. Some charges alleging that a person endangered a federal officer were subsequently dropped.

Immigration policy coordinator Tom Homan acknowledged mistakes while defending the professionalism of the overwhelming majority of ICE officers. He argued that making arrests in local jails would reduce dangerous encounters on the streets. CBS noted that shootings have occurred both in jurisdictions that restrict cooperation with immigration authorities and in those that do not.

The review includes an ICE agent’s shooting at a car in New York’s Marble Hill neighbourhood on October 8. The agent fired seven rounds, striking the driver in the neck. A five-year-old child in the back seat was not hit. DHS says the driver accelerated towards officers, while a witness told CBS the vehicle was moving away from the agents.

On October 2, DHS issued new guidance on vehicle stops, including a prohibition on chases and a requirement for specific training. Department policy permits deadly force when officers reasonably believe they face an immediate threat of death or serious injury. It also directs them to avoid unreasonably creating situations in which deadly force becomes their only option.
