Delhi High Court schedules Jantar Mantar protest-site hearing for October 13

The court declined an urgent hearing on October 12, noting that related issues were already before India's Supreme Court.

A lawyer appearing before the bench challenged the closure of Jantar Mantar to peaceful demonstrations. Counsel argued that the authorities had not designated an alternative venue for lawful protests. Those assertions are the applicant's position, rather than judicial findings.

Acting Chief Justice Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Justice Sanjay Sharma deferred consideration until October 13. The bench said it needed to assess the extent of its intervention given the Supreme Court proceedings.

The court also agreed to consider a separate petition alleging that outsiders had harassed demonstrators during the previous weekend's protest.

Demonstrations on October 10 and 11 followed demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation and allegations of irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls. Scheduling the hearings does not determine the merits of those demands.
