Mirra Andreeva withdraws from Wuhan Open after schedule change
The Russian will miss the WTA 1000 event following the Beijing final. Zheng Qinwen also withdrew from Wuhan, citing a right shoulder injury.
The Women's Tennis Association said on October 12 that Andreeva's withdrawal was due to a change in schedule. It did not attribute her decision to an injury, so the two finalists gave different reasons for missing the event.
The 19-year-old reached the final of the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing the previous week, losing to China's Zheng. Andreeva subsequently rose to a career-high third place in the world rankings.
Andreeva has six WTA titles. This season she won Roland Garros, securing her first Grand Slam singles championship.
The Wuhan tournament runs from October 12 to 18 and has a prize fund exceeding $4 million. Andreeva's withdrawal concerns this event, rather than an announcement that her season has ended.
