Mauritius prime minister calls emergency cabinet meeting after unrest

Navin Ramgoolam scheduled an emergency cabinet meeting for October 13 to discuss law and order on the island.

The prime minister's office announced a meeting at 14:30 local time, equivalent to 13:30 in Moscow. The notice was published by Mauritius's Government Information Service. Ministers are to assess conditions and coordinate their response.

Ramgoolam stressed unity and vigilance, maintaining order and protecting citizens. The announcement did not set out specific decisions taken at the meeting.

Local newspaper Le Mauricien reported unrest in several districts on the evening of October 12. Public transport and schooling were disrupted the following day. The emergency meeting concerns the government's response to those events.

Russia's embassy advised tourists and Russian residents on the island to avoid crowds and non-essential car journeys. The diplomatic mission remains operational.
