Russia advises citizens in Mauritius to limit travel amid unrest

Russia's embassy has urged tourists and residents in Mauritius to avoid non-essential car journeys and crowds after overnight protests.

The October 13 advisory recommends carrying identification when travelling and choosing routes around central and western parts of the island. The embassy said it continues to operate normally. Consular officials told RBC that anyone facing an immediate threat should contact police on 999 or 112.

Russian tourism industry representatives said resort areas had not been affected. ITM group's Andrey Podkolzin told RBC that some morning excursions were cancelled because road clearance and security checks delayed staff, but tour programmes had subsequently resumed. Those statements describe information from operators and their partners.

Local newspaper Le Mauricien reported disruption to schools and public transport on October 13. Protests followed the police shooting of 27-year-old Elodie Thomas. The newspaper dates that shooting to the night of October 9–10, before the unrest reported on Monday evening.

Russia's Association of Tour Operators estimated that between 1,000 and 1,100 Russian tourists could be on the island. That is an industry estimate, rather than a confirmed count of people affected by the protests.
