Maykop unveils bronze sculpture marking Yevgeny Schwartz's 130th anniversary

A bronze sculpture of playwright Yevgeny Schwartz was unveiled in Maykop on October 21, marking the 130th anniversary of his birth, Adygea head Murat Kumpilov said.
The sculpture stands on Schwartz Alley beside the former secondary school where he studied. The building now houses Gymnasium No. 5 and has a memorial plaque. The alley already features sculptures inspired by his works.
Maykop sculptor Aslan Daurov created the artistic design. City chief architect Madina Achmiz, the House of Schwartz project team and the writer's granddaughter Maria Kryzhanovskaya helped develop the concept. It forms part of a tourism project for the city centre.
Student theatre groups attending the regional Ordinary Miracle festival named after Schwartz joined the ceremony. They staged a procession featuring characters from his stories.
Schwartz was born in Kazan on October 21, 1896, and spent his childhood and youth in Maykop. The city has a volunteer-created House of Schwartz museum and a walking route dedicated to the writer.
