Nizhny Novgorod police detain suspects in armed extortion case

Police detained suspects in attacks on business owners and extortion in Nizhny Novgorod, Russian Interior Ministry spokeswoman Irina Volk said on October 16. All suspects are in custody.
Investigators believe a local resident formed an armed group with six acquaintances in September 2025. Volk said the alleged organiser coordinated attacks and divided the proceeds.
The suspects are accused of three armed attacks on local business owners. The ministry said victims handed over sums ranging from 450,000 to 850,000 roubles because they feared for their safety.
National Guard personnel helped carry out the detentions. Criminal cases concern banditry, illegal acquisition and possession of weapons, and extortion.
The alleged organiser and another participant also face a separate case concerning the organisation of an extremist community.
