Mridangam master Guruvayur Dorai dies in Chennai

Indian musician Guruvayur Dorai died in Chennai on October 10. The mridangam player accompanied leading performers of South Indian classical music over many decades.

The Hindu and Kerala Kaumudi reported his death. Their accounts differ on his age, with the former giving 92 and the latter 91. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

Dorai made his concert debut at eight, accompanying vocalist Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar. Chembai later helped him pursue training with Palani Subramania Pillai.

His early teachers included Palghat Subbaiyar and Narayana Pisharody. He developed an interest in rhythm in childhood, and his father encouraged music lessons after he contracted polio.

Dorai developed a distinctive approach by combining his own techniques with Pillai's teaching. For many years, he was singer M.S. Subbulakshmi's regular mridangam accompanist.

During the 1940s, Dorai also performed with his sister, Guruvayur Ponnammal, as a vocalist and mridangam player. His career spanned several generations of musicians.
