Orthopaedist explains what to look for in winter footwear

In comments published on October 9, orthopaedist Andrei Litvinenko named warmth, the right size and a thick sole as key considerations for winter footwear. Speaking to aif.ru, he also advised considering rain, wet snow and icy conditions.

For rain and wet snow, the doctor recommends footwear that keeps water out. Such weather is common at the start of winter, he said, so protection against cold alone does not cover all the conditions a pair may need to withstand.

On ice, Litvinenko said the tread pattern matters because it helps footwear grip the surface. Shoes should suit both the season and the wearer's size. His advice covers several properties together: warmth, sole thickness, protection against water and grip appropriate to the weather.
