Paris demonstrator dies after suffering cardiac arrest

A man died after suffering cardiorespiratory arrest during a demonstration in Paris, the city’s police prefecture said. The protests against rising living costs took place across France on October 17.

BFMTV, citing a police source, said the man became unwell on Boulevard Magenta along the march route. Other participants carried him to the Château-d’Eau rescue station, outside which he died.

An Interior Ministry tally reported more than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters injured. The ministry estimated nationwide turnout at about 550000, while unions put it at 800000.

Clashes with police, arson and looting occurred in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and other cities. President Emmanuel Macron condemned the violence and said those responsible for attacks on prefectures, shops and town halls would be prosecuted.
