Polish PM calls emergency meeting after school attacks

Two school attacks in Poland’s Mazowieckie region over two days left a school worker dead and several people injured. Police also detained a teenager suspected of preparing another attack.

A 19-year-old student at a vocational school in Ostroleka injured nine people. The Associated Press reported that he was arrested after fleeing the scene. The Polish article also said he had brought an improvised explosive device to the school.

The following day, a 15-year-old former pupil injured three staff members at a primary school in Leszczydół-Nowiny. A 37-year-old cleaner later died. Police in Sierpc said they had detained a 17-year-old that day and found knives and searches related to a planned attack.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk called an urgent meeting with officials from the interior, digitalisation, education and health ministries, as well as security services. He said police would increase patrols around schools and enter school grounds.

President Karol Nawrocki offered condolences to the victim’s family and warned against using the tragedies for political attacks. He objected to Tusk’s calls for greater control of online content. Tusk linked the violence to online material, including violent games. Those are politicians’ assessments, not causes established by investigators.
